Know that I had walked by Kubo’s bar many MANY times while in Coorparoo, so my next alphabetical list of Brisbane bars (this challenge: Z to A) was the perfect excuse to pop in. Let’s tick off a K bar!
Keen to try some authentic Filipino foods, and a purple kind of cheesecake I saw on their website – What is that?! Ube cheesecake… KEEN.
So one Sunday in April, I got the guts to walk up to the door. Lunch time. At any point I could have pretended to be browsing the menu and moved on, BUT – the staff asked if I wanted a “table for you?” Just me. YES PLEASE. a table just for me..
(And it was a nice big table by the window. Good lighting.)
Quickly ask – can I grab that slice of that purple cheesecake in the cabinet..?! before anyone else snags it. and YES, I got the LAST slice of ube cheesecake. Phew. OK dessert = sorted. and for lunch: I’ll have the BBQ chicken kare kare (plz…)
GOOGLE – ube cheesecake: Also known as purple yam cheesecake. OK, so it gets its colour from sweet potato. Sounds good. Looks good. I like purple things.
Pop music fills the restaurant – lots of families and couples inside. Lads with beers outside. Me with my lemonade inside.
Then: 6 giant skewers of chicken arrived at my table, drowning in peanut sauce, sprinkled with crushed peanuts. YUMMMM. It was DELICIOUS. Didn’t get many photos before I yummed it up.
They gave me a giant steak knife to carve up the moist chicken – I even scooped up the lettuce garnish with mayo drizzle, just to try all the things..
Would I go back? YES. and I DID. Just recently to see if they had any purple cheesecake (they did not) So I got some ube balls to take away –
Sweet doughnutty treats, with purple sprinkly bits. I scoffed them the other night after some beers. Ube great.
